The project is located in Chehalis, WA, about a mile from the historic downtown core and with easy access and visibility from Interstate 5. The site is less than a quarter mile from both a northbound and southbound exit ramp, making it a convenient stop for travelers while also serving as the area’s main branch.
Mass timber construction was used for its sustainable qualities and warm materiality, and large windows provide views into and out of the space while letting in ample daylight. The design capitalizes on modern structural technologies and materials to create transparency between interior and exterior, keeping users and fellow community members connected to the functions within. The design team worked closely with the structural engineer to understand the limitations of the CLT roof panels and maximize their capabilities for spans and overhangs. The light and airy design is a purposeful response to the heavy and monolithic aesthetic traditionally associated with financial buildings.
