Browser’s bookshop is a small and beloved bookstore that is tucked into a 100-year-old building in downtown Olympia. Our design solution was to go back to the beginning, chapter one, and uncover the forgotten character; bricks and windows hidden behind layers of remodeling. The existing space was full of nooks and crannies, but it was in desperate need of an intimate reading room for community book club members. Heavy timbers were added, walls were removed, a children’s book area was tucked below a new open stairway. A storage loft was transformed into that new mezzanine reading room with views to the bookstore below.
